  • Murray Wimbledon Victory Would Win A Punter £16,000

Posted on June 29th, 2009 admin No comments

A punter would win £16,000 if Andy Murray wins Wimbledon. Mike Griffiths from Ruthin in Clwyd staked £80 on the Scot to win Wimbledon by 2010, in August 2004, when his odds were 200/1.

William Hill mentioned they had so far been unable to contact Mr Griffiths, who was on holiday in Spain.

William Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe said: “We’ve tried to make contact to see whether Mr Griffiths may be planning a visit to Wimbledon, but he’s apparently on a touring holiday in northern Spain with a malfunctioning mobile, so his family can’t reach him to tell him how Murray and his bet are getting on.”

William Hill would pay out more than £1 million if Murray wins the tournament.

  • William Hill To Move Offshore

Ralph Topping, William Hill chief executive, mentioned that the bookmaker would be moving its telephone and internet operations offshore.

“We face worldwide competition from 400 or so English-language betting websites. In these circumstances, clearly we do not have the luxury of being parochial about our future or taking a simplistic stance on complicated issues,” Topping told the Financial Times.

Topping mentioned that the competitive pressures it found itself under were behind the bookmaker’s decision to close 20 betting shops in the UK this year and to freeze the pay of 16,000 staff.

According to figures released by the Racecourse Owners Association, the UK government could lose up to £45m a year in taxation if the three leading UK bookmakers, William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral, relocated their online and telephone businesses offshore.

Sportingbet bettor won $27, 721.72 on a $5 MLB Baseball bet last week.

The punter placed a $5 bet on a total of 14 baseball wagers, including moneylines, runlines and over/unders. All 14 cashed.

The first bet was a moneyline wager on the Los Angeles Angels to beat the Oakland Athletics on the road. The Angels won as a +109 moneyline road dog.

Those winnings – the original stake plus profit – were then placed on the New York Mets to beat the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets won as +112 road underdogs.

That money was bet on a matchup between the Florida Marlins and Boston Red Sox, with the Red Sox cashing as -1.5 runline favorites at +115.

After nine more winning bets – which included five moneyline, three over/under and one runline wagers – the whole amount was placed on the final matchup: the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins won as -133 moneyline favorites and the bettor suddenly found himself with nearly 28 thousand dollars in profit.

According to a report from the China Daily newspaper, authorities began checking five gambling websites in 2007 that offered betting on soccer, horseracing and card games. The Bureau subsequently found that these sites had received stakes from people in ten Chinese provinces and cities.

‘We found that gang members operated the sites,” said Dao’an.

“Some of the gangs used leased servers in the United States, Singapore and the Republic Of Korea to run online gambling websites and others acted as agents for overseas gambling websites. They developed gamblers in China’s mainland for the websites.”

He revealed that 27 members of the ‘gangs’ had been given jail terms while 30 others were expected to be charged later this month.

‘Through the detection of the five cases, police found clues to another gambling gangs, which organised gamblers in casinos in Macao, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia and lent out money at high interest rates to gamblers.’

William Hill won best on-line betting site award at inaugural Irish Sports Betting Awards in Dublin. William Hill was nominated for the award along with Betfair, Boylesports, and Ladbrokes, but judges decided that William Hill is currently the best betting website available to Irish punters.

“We’re delighted to receive this prestigious award. We listened to the Irish punters and asked them what they wanted in a sports betting website and I think the results are there for everyone to see,” said William Hill’s Director of Public Relations David Hood.

“Already this year we’ve seen a huge increase in Irish traffic on williamhill.com and we think that our website was a worthy winner of this award” said Hood.
