  • 2010 Stanley Cup Televised by Versus

The 2010 Stanley Cup is down to the final four teams, and many of those matchups play on Versus.  Versus hasn’t had much luck in the five years of their NHL contract. However, they have made some progress this year.  What harmed them this year was a disagreement with DirecTV but luckily for Versus that clash was finished before the 2010 Stanley Cup betting playoffs started.

In the first two rounds of Stanley Cup gambling, Versus enjoyed their highest viewership.  Actually, it is the largest viewership for the NHL since 1994. The ratings are up 25 percent from last year. For the conference semifinals, Versus enjoyed 1.04 million viewers, which was higher than last year. “When we first started, there were a lot of naysayers who said we weren’t big enough to deliver to these audiences,” said president of Versus Jamie Davis. “I think we’ve proven ourselves.”

The NHL got more viewership on sports giants ESPN and ESPN2 when it was carried on those two channels, but during the last year of their contract, the average ratings had dipped below what Versus obtains now.  When the matches were on ESPN 2 the ratings were really weak.  ESPN might have held onto the NHL, but they didn’t want to shell out for it.  Versus jumped in and paid the NHL more money than ESPN was willing to pay and things are now sailing along for the network.  The current three-year contract with Versus and NBC goes through next year but negotiations are already going for the next one.

“Versus has provided a home for hockey, particularly in the playoffs,” said NHL CEO John Collins. “Now you have the casual fan finding Versus.”

ESPN may like to return to doing hockey. However they don’t want it as an everyday sport.  Versus is providing the NHL the level of coverage that ESPN wouldn’t.

The conference finals in 2010 Stanley Cup are mostly aired by Versus. They’re even televising two games of the Stanley Cup Finals. What hurts the network a little bit is that Washington and Pittsburgh are finished and that the Montreal Canadiens is not a beloved team in the United States.
