Soccer City is the gem in South Africa’s crown, built in 1987 and with a capacity of 94,700 (excluding Media and VIP’s) it is sure to offer a great atmospheric state for the lucky few thousand that manage to buy their tickets and hopefully as the stadium to be used for the first game, provide an excellent springboard for a magnificent tournament

A truly awe-inspiring stadium and one of the most impressive venues on the African continent, newly-reconstructed Soccer City will host the first and final matches of the 2010 World Cup. The stadium is widely regarded as the heart of football in South Africa as it has hosted many important matches through history. The shell of the stadium is designed to have the appearance of an African pot, known as a ‘calabash’, which sits on the top of a ‘pit of fire’. Recent upgrades involved extending the upper tier; adding 99 more suites to bring the number to 184; constructing an encircling roof; adding new changing room facilities and installing new floodlighting. There are vertical lines on seats within the stadium that lead towards the nine other stadia in South Africa, and Berlin, where the World Cup was last won. Capacity: 94,700 although limited to 89,000 during the World Cup in line with FIFA’s security guidelines.

    Also known as: FNB Stadium.
